… Stanislaw Soltan, features in this announcement of an upcoming conference sponsored by the National Museum, Gdańsk.

Back in 2008, UD was quoted in Ralph Nader's Public Citizen (he's no longer associated with the organisation) on the corruption of medical schools past pharma lobbyists. Pleasant, so many years afterwards, to discover that.

… appears in this New York Times essay nigh Brutalist architecture in Poland.

Poland's Modernist structures had, in fact, get-go appeared as a class of change inside the Communist arrangement, a vernacular of liberation for the land's architects, who were finally permitted to motion beyond the strictures of Stalin'due south Socialist Realism. Amid the full general thawing of the Khrushchev era, many of these architects — among the virtually prominent were Halina Skibniewska and Jerzy Soltan, the latter of whom studied under Le Corbusier — were for the kickoff fourth dimension permitted to travel to countries on the other side of the Iron Drape. The style they adopted was largely a replica of Western Modernism.

Maybe I read too much Kafka growing up. Whatsoever – I hate and fearfulness bureaucracy; I always assume having anyaffair to practise with it volition be hell. So I ignore and neglect it as much every bit humanly possible.

Naturally therefore I filled out my retirement benefits application wrong – and wrong in a very — I hate this discussion — impactful manner. I paid reasonable attention to what I was doing when I filled information technology out, only that wasn't enough, and I made one pregnant mistake.

I ignored the commencement few messages from SSA alerting me to the rather expensive implications of my fuckupery; when I finally held my nose and began reading further letters, I realized I had to attempt to fix what I'd done. But how? Would the SSA even permit me to change the form?

***************

So … the balance of this narrative is going to be equally UDesque as what I've already written. What y'all are about to read is in fact echtUD.

I decided my best bet lay in action directe. Forget phones and cyberspace: This would take to be face to face up in a local SSA office. No dubiousness the function itself would exist appalling and the wait (in society to be told to fuck myself) would be all day. Fine. I deserved the punishment.

Washington Avenue, Rockville, was all I had past manner of location, but I figured I'd go to the vicinity and check my phone for the verbal accost. Except that my phone for some reason wasn't connecting, so I had to keep walking and reading the fronts of role buildings… And there it was.

I entered exactly the crammed immiseration sleeping room I anticipated – six packed rows of seating from which you stared at numbered windows and a figurer screen above them which told you what waiting list digits had only been called. I drew a deep pitiful breath, took my number (C395), and sabbatum down with an article near the war in Republic of yemen.

To my left, in a little alcove, hovered two genial but hawkish policemen: If your cell phone rang, they rushed over and told you to put it away or leave the room. When a large Chinese family loitered for a bit at the exit, they hurried them out. These two kept the room tranquillity and orderly.

I also noticed that the SSA clerks dealt calmly and efficiently with people — fifty-fifty disheveled, confused people.

**************

My number was called fashion, style before I figured it would be. I gathered my pathetic paperwork, mentally rehearsed the terse sob story I'd prepared, and drove forrad to window 3. I expected ane of the following outcomes.

ane. Yous're in the wrong office. You need to go to Silver Spring, Baltimore, New York…
2. What? I don't sympathise.
3. Once y'all do what you lot did on the form, there's no going back.
4. You lot take to file an entreatment. Here's a listing of fees, forms, and attorneys…
5. Come back tomorrow with more than documentation.

I had just watched the woman who asked my name and age handle a addled shuffling boyfriend who said to her past way of introduction I'm very sensitive…

Rather broke my heart, if you actually desire to know, simply she was kind and patient and solved his problem. Mayhap she could even brand some sense of ol' UD.

**************

"No problem."

Did I just hear that? Did she but say in answer to my convoluted hopeless entrapment in the deathcogs of the automobile that she was nigh to reattach my positive negalator to my negative posilator licketysplit and all was well?

Yes.

"Merely tell me," she said, trying to smooth out the incredibly creased pages of my passport so she could read them for i.d., "why did y'all brand that error?"

"Because I'thousand dumb," I grinned.

She didn't grinning.

"You know," she said, "I have a bit of an issue with uninformed clients."

What followed, equally the immiserated masses waited their turns behind me, was the talking-to I mentioned in this mail'south title. This was the sort of thing I was expected to know; it's non all that difficult to empathize what to do. 1 shouldn't be agape of bureaucracies. 1 has to deal with them sometimes. Etc. Etc.

Etc.

Etc.

I didn't begrudge her. Au contraire, I deserved it; in that location were actual needy people all over the room, people not floating along on high FICO scores, lots of SSA coin, and several other sources of funds. Why the hell was I clogging upward the works?

I mean, she didn't say that final stuff; that's me talking. She simply – and kindly – told me to face the music.

Look at this picture.

Mr UD stands just backside and to the right of the RESPECT EXISTENCE sign.

UD was featured in her friend Barney Carroll's obituary. And in her friend Wojciech Fangor's obituary.

La Child? She was featured, with her chorus, in a NYT image from one of Obama'southward inaugural concerts. We ordered that ane; it hangs in her bedchamber.

Is information technology a coincidence that this happened days subsequently they featured University Diaries in their pages?

Merely saying.

Join her at the Georgetown Public Library this afternoon.

To save you lot time:

Margaret Soltan, a George Washington University professor who gave Hunter $75 through Crowdrise on Friday, said schools should stand upwardly to people who behave desperately by returning their money. She is not connected to Hunter but blogs on education topics.

Keeping the money "just makes you look contemptuous. It makes you await mercenary and immoral," Soltan said.

I was interviewed this morn almost the Shkreli donation to Hunter College High School.

Here's the article in which I'm quoted.

… And so blogging will be afterwards today.

The New York Times has contacted UD for more information about Wojciech Fangor, the Smooth painter who died last calendar week at 92.

So who knows. Perhaps some of her memories will appear non only on Radio Poland, only in the NYT. UD would like that.
